Manufacturing
In many ways, Manufacturing is a very different industry from the others, especially on the level of an international group. Where other businesses require the full administrative infrastructure to operate, Manufacturing companies quite often only require a handful of managers and then workers on the shop floor. Quite often, it is entirely possible for a Manufacturing company to operate without touching middle management even remotely. Until something happens.
That something can be a new legislature introduced by the country where the larger group has a factory. It can be an acquisition by a new owner and a sudden need to adjust to a whole new set of processes, methodologies and practices in reporting or accounting. It can be something as simple as making two factories follow the same process for building tools. All of this requires support from people who understand key decision makers as well as the people who build the company’s products, and can bring in the perspective of the outside market at that. And when in-house infrastructure isn’t there, Orrery expertise is the next best thing.

Past Successes
An Orrery consultant partnered with a function executive responsible for brick-and-mortar points of sales of a German carmaker brand. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, market studies have shown the consumer preferences for buying vehicles have shifted towards a more proactive, educated and digital stance.
The client, wishing to keep its position as one of Europe’s Top 3 carmakers in terms of sales, required an overhaul of its point of sale (PoS) process guidelines, which would then be distributed to the operators of their brick-and-mortar sale locations functuoning under a franchise deal. Orrery and client stakeholders in tandem revised the current PoS guidelines in context of Orrery-supplied market analysis, and produced a set of succession processes which Orrery then helped roll out through workshops on physical PoS locations.
Since the engagement coincided with a roll-out of the brand onto several new markets, these workshops included teaching these processes to new employees in several new markets in Middle East and Oceania.
An Orrery consultant partnered with a function executive responsible for flagship digital products that the client offers to its customers. These products allow customers to design and configure BTO vehicles, filter through and locate vehicles in stock, and get recommendations of best vehicle offers based on their intended use case.
Orrery led activities to build product business cases backed by complex market and competitive analyses, secure budget from our client stakeholder’s superiors and approval from departments in charge of technical developent, create technical project definitions within SAFe Project Portfolio framework, oversee technical product development and coordinate with client‘s board members and B-1 leadership when a change was sufficiently high profile to warrant their buy-in.
In the end, our consultant delivered an end-to-end design of 4 flagship client-facing digital products and oversaw the products’ technical development and market focus testing.
Orrery helped a Swiss mid-sized Pharmaceutical manufacturer with under-licence production lines within EU territory to deal with Regulatory communication and regaining compliance.
The client invited the scrutiny of one of the EU’s national healthcare regulators after an inspection at a production plant for OTC pharmaceutical products and was given a tight deadline for correction.
Orrery was brought in to review the entire library of the client’s manufacturing processes that were the subject of the client’s regulatory non-compliance. Its consultants designed compliant processes and communicated with the Regulator on behalf of the client, managing to prove correction of non-compliant practices within the stated regulatory deadline.
An Orrery consultant advised the Operations Manager of a multinational industrial manfuacturer with plant locations in multiple European countries and a principal plant in Germany. While its German operation was running smoothly and was under sufficient supervision, its other locations were unable to replicate the same efficiency in manufacturing products on the shop floor.
Through a series of workshops with shop floor personnel and IT specialists responsible for supply and orders systems communicating with the shop floor, the issue of misaligned processes and shadow IT ecosystem was identified.
Within 6 months, Orrery brought all shop floors across the group to the same process and reporting standard using the same set of tool through a series of alignment sessions with each shop floor lead individually.
Orrery was approached by an industry confederation of companies manufacturing pharmaceuticals and adjacent products. Given their size and the specialisation of their staff, the client’s members often lacked consistent regulatory monitoring and compliance advisory capabilities in-house.
An Orrery consultant was attached to the interest group, to create a third party compliance centre of excellence for the area of pharmaceutical manufacturing, focusing mainly on the regulations that influenced the way pharmacauticals are produced and requirements that governments of the EU imposed on their production plants.
Orrery provides a long-term, ongoing engagement to members of this industry confederation, providing quarterly reviews of manufacturing painpoints, drafting joint responses to newly introduced regulatory legislature, monitoring of new regulations and ad-hoc consulting.
